S/S Walkürie was a 5000 ton German steamer that carried coal and coke between Danzig and Kristiansand in Norway.

On December 20, 1942, the ship was heading towards Kristiansand with her cargo when the strong current and fog caused her to go off course and run aground at Hjälmebådan in Havstenssund.

Attempts were made to salvage the ship and the cargo was dumped overboard to lighten the ship, but it was soon realized that she could not be saved and orders were given to abandon ship. For a large part of the crew, this evacuation went shakily as they began to stock up on alcohol from the onboard store. All of the crew survived and were taken ashore in Strömstad.

S/S Walkürie is today a good wreck dive with little growth. The wreck broke into two parts and sank on each side of the ground that became its downfall. There is a lot to see even though only the bow and amidships are intact, this part is about 70m long. Unfortunately the wreck is in a very weather-sensitive area. Some penetration is possible but there is a high risk of collapse. The minimum diving depth is in the bow at 32m and amidships the depth is 40m.
