At three o’clock in the morning on September 8th, the Norwegian steamer Kong Alf of 1070 GRT was on its way from Rügenwalde to Oslo when it sprang a leak off Varberg in the heavy storm, 25 meters per second, that prevailed. When water began to enter the ship, everyone was put to the pumps and emergency flares were sent up. A while later, however, water entered the engine room and the engines stopped.
The unmaneuverable ship was seen from shore during the morning and the lifeboat station in Bua was notified but they had no lifeboat available because it was in another location on behalf of the Crown. Instead, the lifeboat in Galtebäck was contacted at 06 o’clock and came to the rescue, but was delayed due to engine problems. They managed to get out just in time, at 13 o’clock, to see the last of the bow sticking up where everyone on board was, before the ship sank. The entire crew and the German guard on board were saved.
At 3 pm they arrived at the port of Varberg where the rescued were given food and clothing. The position was given as just west of Södra Horta at the height of Bua harbour. The ship was carrying a cargo of rye at the time of the sinking.
Sticks up minimally. Only remains. Possibly after machinery or winches and parts of masts and some beams.
