The steamship Hohenhörn originally operated for the shipping company Hansegesellschaft Aschpurwis & Veltjens in Hamburg and under the name Colon (1937-40) she was flagged in Panama. Under the name Vaccares (1924-29) her home country was France, but was seized by the Kriegsmarine at the beginning of World War II for troop transport under the name Maravi – A16.
At 0745 on 21 October 1944, Hohenhörn was mined southwest of Stora Pölsan. Those on board escaped in the lifeboats and were later picked up by another German steamship. Status: The wreck is almost completely intact with the exception of the hull being broken just aft of the forward hold. The bow has completely sunk to the seabed.
Nice wreck to dive on. The masts are up. The mast has fallen forward. Skylight and lofts with cabins. Forward is the building where you can look into the wheelhouse. The steering wheel is gone. On the floor, at a depth of 50 m, below you can look into the salon where the crystal chandeliers are still on the ceiling. Cupboards and chairs are also still there. The mud is up to the backs of the chairs and there are some things hanging from the ceiling. In the aft hold there are, among other things, cooking carts.
