Dive year 2009

The year began with us carrying out service and checks on all parts of the diving equipment so that everything was ready in time for the upcoming wreck diving season. Among other things, we checked the 1st stage, 2nd stage and cylinder valves.

After servicing the rigs and tanks, it was time for the annual inspection of the boat. It is part of diving and like everything else, it is important that everything is in top condition when the season starts. Having a boat has both its advantages and disadvantages. Sure, it requires a bit of work and money, but when it is finished and the season starts, the advantages are so much greater as you can control your own trips.

At the end of February it was time for diving again after a short winter break. Early in the morning with a few degrees below zero we gathered in Träslövsläge. The ice was thin in the harbor but the calm weather meant that it also froze a bit out to sea. We were on our way out to dive on S/S Capitaine Louis Malbert. A wreck we had long wanted to visit. The large cargo ship is about 100m long and lies on the starboard side at a depth of 53m. Once at the position we drove over the wreck a few times and got a good idea of ​​which is fore and aft. We anchored the boat amidships. We focused our dive on the superstructure. Valves and window panes are still there and everything feels large and well preserved on the wreck. The dive ended with a temperature of 1ºC from 6m and up to the surface.

We also conducted a second dive on a more unknown wreck. The echo sounder didn’t give much indication, but once on the bottom it turned out that we had judged the echo correctly. The remains of a wooden wreck with cargo were still there.

We ended the day by driving over some more unknown turning positions. Luck was with us and we found what we were looking for. Deep but interesting for later this year.

The second trip of the year set off from the port of Bua in mid-March to Erling Lindøe. The weather was better than the forecast had predicted, so in light seas it was quick to get to the wreck. After the wreck image had towered up on the echo sounder, it was just a matter of dropping the anchor and it set on the first try. Erling Lindøe was a Norwegian freighter built in 1917 and measured 72 x 11m. On August 11, 1944, they were on their way from Norway to Germany with a cargo of silicon when they hit a mine outside Nidingen and sank very quickly. 19 of the 25 on board died. The mine hit the bow and there is some damage there, but otherwise there are many details to see and places to swim into as the wreck is 46m straight.
After quickly getting ready, the descent began and expectations were high as visibility is usually good in the spring. It was fine and the skylight at 36m became visible without the lamplight at about 27-28m. Even down on the wreck the visibility was good all the way from 36-46m and only a weak current was noticeable. The temperature was 5 degrees on the bottom and decreased to 2 at 6m and above.

The weather forecast changed several times before the weekend, but when the overall weather still showed good weather at the end of March, we decided to go out to the wreck of a German landing craft from World War II. We are not entirely sure exactly which ship it is, but there is much evidence that it is one of the landing craft that was sunk at the end of World War II by British aircraft. The wreck contains a lot of spare parts for torpedoes and the propellers are clearly visible in the stern. Visibility was very good and from a depth of 15 m we saw the wreck where it lies at 28 m on the light sandy bottom.

The last day of the Easter weekend, in mid-April, was intended for diving and the forecast looked good. Unfortunately, it did not match reality and the basic plan had to be changed so we anchored at S/S Walkyre instead. Walkyre was a German cargo ship with dimensions of 55x8m. It was built in 1882 but when it was on its way to Germany with a cargo of timber on November 17, 1885, it collided with a British ship. Today it rests keel-right at 36m and apart from the fact that the bow is destroyed by the collision and the superstructures are disintegrated, there is a lot to see. Metal objects, fine wooden blocks and pulleys. We came down on the starboard side just aft of the area that was damaged in the collision. Since the visibility was not the best and there is a lot of trawl nets and fishing lines, we chose to lie down on the wreck and first swim to the stern. On the way there we took a quick look in one of the cargo holds we passed. When that was done we swam towards the remains of the bow but the visibility was worse there so we used the last few minutes instead to study the area around the steam engine. Visibility was about 3m and a weak current swept over the wreck from port to starboard. Down at depth it was 5 degrees and at the 6m stop it was 6 degrees.

The surface interval was used to transport us to the wreck after Kolbjörn. It was a pontoon crane that sank on February 14, 1968 while being towed by the tugboat Hilmer on its way from Gothenburg to Landskrona. Today it lies upside down at 24m on a hard light bottom. The propeller and rudder are clearly visible and also the crane pointing out from the starboard side. If you look under the hull you can glimpse various winches and the skylight.

In mid-May it was an early morning to set off from Träslövsläge. Five distances off the coast awaited our target for today’s dive. The cargo ship M/S G.O.  of 300 grt and a length of 48m. Loaded with rye, M/S G.O.  sank on November 25, 1959 while en route from Bandholm to Oslo, the cargo shifted and capsized. The crew managed to get to Varberg. Today she rests at a diving depth of between 42-48m. The wreck is standing straight and is a nice little wreck with penetration possibilities and a few details to see.

We got down to the superstructure. and swam further towards the stern, down at the bottom you can see the rudder and half the propeller the rest has sunk into the mud. In the bow you can clearly see the anchor chain and there are opportunities to get below deck. The superstructure is well preserved and easy to explore. During our dive we had good visibility, but a little current both on the wreck and on the ascent.

At the end of May it was a little windy but the wind direction made it possible for us to go out to the M/S Robert Müller for two good dives.

This is the wreck of a German cargo ship that during a voyage from Norway to Denmark on March 22, 1945 hit a mine and sank off Nidingen. Nine people died but 15 managed to save themselves. Today it rests keel-side down at 45m depth with the shallowest parts at 36m.

There is a lot to see both inside and out and as it is only 69m long, time has been spent on the entire wreck. Valves, engine room, bow anchor and penetration of the cargo space and the remains of the superstructures.

At the beginning of June we went out from Falkenberg harbor. It only took 30 minutes, counting from the harbor, until we had anchored at Holstentor. Holstentor was built in 1905 and made its last voyage in 1945. During its last voyage, the ship listed heavily and took on water. The crew escaped in the lifeboats and made it ashore at Glommen.

Today, the ship is standing upright. There are still large bales of paper pulp on the ship. The wreck is very exciting and offers good penetration possibilities. You can swim into the engine room, among other things.

At the beginning of July we returned to Holstentor for additional dives and at the end of July we dived at Dania.

At the beginning of August we went out to the German timekeeper Ostmark which was sunk by bombers on April 21, 1945. The ship was 103*14m and about 3000brt, today rests at 43m depth with a slight list to starboard. You encounter the wreck at 31m and at that level there are many interesting things such as grenade boxes, fog oxygen tanks, two skylights and the remains of where the chimney used to be.

In the stern you can see the cannon and the mine rail. You can follow the mine rail on both the starboard and port sides. However, the upper deck and various plates have started to collapse so access there may be limited.

The anchor was set at the aft skylight and the dive began with us swimming aft to check out the ammunition store. We then turned the dive and followed the upper deck forward until we came to the trawl-draped remains of the bow, where you can see the extensive damage caused by the bombers when they scored a direct hit in the forward ammunition store. On the second dive, the camera was left in the boat and we spent the time swimming to interesting places we had located on the first dive.

In mid-October we had a good trip in good October weather for diving at Ostmark. The dives were carried out with the aim of filming and documenting more difficult-to-reach areas inside Ostmark. Filming inside the wreck is a difficult challenge with silt that can stir up, creating zero visibility immediately. With good dives and film in our luggage, we turned the bow towards port and enjoyed the memories of the day.
